The R&B stylings of saxophonist Kirk Whalum are in full force on COLORS. A pleasant blend of soulful integrity and clear tone are Whalum's forte and he holds nothing back on this collection of pop-flavored gems. With cohorts like Philippe Saisse, Gerald Albright, Howard Hewett, and even Allison Krauss, the special moments are plentiful. From the funky "Cannonnesque" to the Latin-ish "Escolhido (Chosen)," COLORS holds something for everyone.
Whalum's melodic strength is displayed on "Strength In You" and "The Back Porch." COLORS also has it's share of touching ballads, like "Daddy Loves You," "If Only For One Night" and "All I Need." The down-home feel of "Natchez" is an intriguing change of pace. Like contemporaries Bob James, David Sanborn and Jeff Lorber, Whalum has taken the mantle of Adult Contemporary Jazz to a new level of musicianship and style.
