A timeless masterpiece, a true cornerstone of progressive rock, and the ultimate album in Yes’ discography, Close to the Edge (1972) continues to captivate longtime fans and win over new listeners more than 50 years after its release. Considered the central pillar of an almost perfect trilogy—alongside Fragile (1971) and Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973)—it also stands as a testament to a golden era, arguably the one that featured the most iconic lineup, with Bill Bruford on drums and Rick Wakeman on keys. With just one vinyl and three tracks, the British band shook the foundations of a world already well-versed in sprawling sonic epics that could fill the entire side of a record (like "Echoes" by Pink Floyd, which takes up the whole B-side of Meddle, released the previous year). But it’s the blend of epic scope and rhythmic drive, combined with flawless production (achieved through recording sessions that were reportedly as tense as they were painful—especially for Bruford), that left a lasting impression.

The title track, "Close to the Edge," occupies the entire A-side. The journey begins with atmospheric keyboard layers and bird songs before the first break hits and immediately sets the tone. Technically complex and flawlessly executed, it evolves into a more melodic and engaging section, which then gives way to a long suspended bridge. That, in turn, fades to let the track kick off again in full force, keyboard solo included, before an apotheotic ending. Yes delivers irresistible choruses and ambitious arrangements that flirt with grandiosity, but the musicians' mastery keeps everything contained to yield perfection. An unforgettable 18-minute journey, enhanced by two more tracks perceptively chosen to round out the experience.

"And You and I," a luminous ballad, offers an enchanted interlude largely carried by Steve Howe’s acoustic guitar, while "Siberian Khatru" brings the intensity back up with its dazzling series of intricate, mind-bending riffs. In just three songs, Yes left a visual and sonic mark on history. Close to the Edge is also the first album to feature the band’s now-iconic bubble logo, designed by Roger Dean. Bill Bruford would leave shortly after to join King Crimson, replaced by Alan White on drums for the recording of Tales from Topographic Oceans.

This 2025 Super Deluxe edition brings together the original album, newly remastered, along with another remastering by Steven Wilson, which includes instrumental versions, rarities (singles, alternate versions, rough mixes), and a live concert (Live at The Rainbow, 12/15/1972).
