What is unique about Bongo Fury is that above all that it brings together Frank Zappa and his Mother’s playing live for the first and only time with the great Don Van Vliet alias Captain Beefheart during a few concerts given together in spring 1975. In the end, the album mixes six songs from those performances at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas, with three songs recorded in the studio more than a year before (during the recording of the album One Size Fits All and part of Studio Tan, which was to be released in 1978). Bongo Fury stands out in Frank Zappa's discography because it reunites, for the last time, many of the musicians he had played and recorded with since the early 1970s, on the albums Over-Nite Sensation (1973), Apostrophe (' ) (1974), Roxy & Elsewhere (1974) and One Size Fits All (1975). Captain Beefheart sings and plays harmonica on several tracks, also reading his poems like a beat poet on Sam with the Showing Scalp Flat Top and Man with the Woman Head, feeding his surrealist visions into Zappa's great circus. Listening to this record, the relationship between Beefheart and Zappa starts to seem perfectly natural, a matter-of-fact organic affinity... Another character who brings his share of magic is drummer and percussionist Terry 'Ted' Bozzio, whose frenetic virtuosity sets the live tracks of Bongo Fury ablaze. After these concerts, Bozzio would regularly appear alongside the master, both live and on future albums. Advance Romance, a long track running to over eleven minutes, on which another of Zappa's acolytes - the incredible Napoleon Murphy Brock on vocals, shines, blending his funk into Zappa's psychedelia. © Yan Céh/Qobuz
