Honey Dijon has timed Black Girl Magic, her second release, just right, following on from Beyoncé’s Renaissance which drew attention to house music. Some might be surprised that this is only her second album, considering she’s been on the clubbing circuit since the late 90s. Her first album in 2017, The Best of Both Worlds, was undeniably ‘a DJ album’ with seven-minute-long tracks designed for the dancefloor. Here, Honey Dijon has opted for a more pop-inspired format, instead offering three or four-minute-long songs, perfect for radio and streaming. Reading between the lines, it’s evident that this American DJ believes the music from the clubs in her native Chicago will become the new pop. However, this album outwardly shows itself to be ‘dedicated to love’ - a subject matter that Kameelah Waheed discusses in the spoken word she delivers over a piano melody in the opening track. Ramona Renea continues the theme immediately after, with ‘Love Is a State of Mind’: a joyful American-style house track, reminiscent of New York in the 90s and 2000s.
We also find the goddess of 2000s pop, Eve, on ‘In the Club’, another dancefloor anthem. There’s the equally crazy ‘Everybody’ (feat. Pabllo Vittar & Urias): a disco track that will get everybody moving. Honey Dijon doesn’t limit herself to club music, delivering groovier tracks like ‘Drama’, a bit of acid jazz as well as the R&B-inspired ‘Stand’. Whatever you do, don’t skip ‘Show Me Some Love’ (feat. Sadie Walker), produced with Channel Tres: a magical shamanic song. Legendary producer Mike Dunn even helps out on two tracks, ‘Work’ and ‘C's Up’: two songs that conclude an album which–whilst it might not rewrite the destiny of house music–deserves to be listened to.
