Discovered at the end of the 1980’s alongside Wynton Marsalis, who introduced him to his band, Eric Reed immediately launched into a solo career. At just 20 years old, he was wasting no time. Since then Reed has not slowed down, recording a whopping thirty albums. Not to mention the many sideman gigs for Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Benny Carter, Cassandra Wilson, Clark Terry, Dianne Reeves, Elvin Jones, Ron Carter and Christian McBride. Now 53 years old, Black, Brown, And Blue is not just the nth record in the already dense discography of this prolific veteran. And while the title of this work, recorded at Stagg Street Studio in Van Nuys, California on 24 June 2022, is considered a nod to Duke Ellington, its content is a celebration of Black and Brown songwriters, and their jazz roots.
Backed by Luca Alemanno on double bass and Reggie Quinerly on drums, Reed pays tribute Ellington’s genius, of course, but also the genius of Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Wayne Shorter, Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Buddy Collette, Buster Williams, as well as more pop-oriented artists like Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers. “Where I am now in my life, I'm only concerned about conveying the most personal and heartfelt ideas through my music. And this record is the culmination of my life so far.” Beyond its symbolic value, Black, Brown and Blue most importantly showcases the extent of Eric Reed’s musicality and sophistication. Emotional improvisations, fluid exchanges with his rhythm section, everything is deep and unpretentious, beautiful with no frills. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
