Austin’s Cruiserweight are a punk-pop outfit fronted by sassy vocalist Stella Maxwell. Where SWEET WEAPONRY, the band’s 2005 debut, introduced the group’s hard-edged take on mouth-watering power pop, 2008’s BIG BOLD LETTERS builds on that album’s promise, delivering more hooks, more muscle, and more relentless energy. From the punchy New Wave rush of “Distraction” to the jerky, melodic jumps of “You Don’t Get It,” Cruiserweight have much in common with their emo and punk-pop brethren, but the quality of their hook-packed tunes and Maxwell’s singing set them a cut above.
