David Bernard and the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony made a splash in 2016 with their recording of the corrected edition of Igor Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps, paired with Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra. Their follow-up album also presents modernist works, and there's reason for excitement here, even though the program may not be as newsworthy as the previous release. Performing Bartók's Dance Suite, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Aaron Copland's suite from Appalachian Spring, and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, the musicians show versatility and expressive variety in dramatically different styles, and their virtuosity is impressive throughout. Somewhat surprisingly, this chamber orchestra produces an ensemble sound that is almost as big as a full symphony orchestra, and despite occasional rough edges, the music never sounds thin or exposed. For samples showing clear contrasts of expression and sonority, as well as the ensemble's flexibility in different repertoire, try the energetic Finale of the Dance Suite (track 6), a true showstopper, and the placid opening of Vaughan Williams' Fantasia (track 7).
