Nouvelle vague strikes again! In 2006, two years after the first instalment of Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux dreamt up concept piece saw unexpected success, the two partners reconvened to the studio. But what's this Nouvelle Vague project all about? It's a musical saga that's both light-hearted and serious, revisiting songs from punk, post-punk and new wave repertoires (among others) in the new forms of electro, bossa nova or folk. The title of this second album is of course a nod to Jean-Luc Godard, but more importantly a romanticization of the vintage (and its analogues), and a hint to the atypical aspect of the project. The word "atypical" is perhaps not strong enough for a nugget like Fade To Grey, which takes the art of re-appropriation to its extremes. The British band Visage’s new wave hit, with its famous monologue spoken in French, becomes a heart-rending realist song under Collin and Libaux's magical fingers, unspooled low and slow, and dressed up with a tired accordion.
Blondie's Heart of Glass evokes the same sense of astonishment is, with its nonchalant country lightness, as does Echo & The Bunnymen's The Killing Moon, with its three-beat tenderness and Mélanie Pain’s (one of the star voices of Nouvelle Vague, among many others) enchanting timbre. The present edition has the advantage of having a number of more or less previously unreleased bonus tracks to offer, starting with a charming cover of Grauzone’s (Stephan Eicher's first band) Eisbaer and of Sex Beat, in which a wild piano and percussion replace Gun Hub’s classic rock rhythm. Beyond their intrinsic merit, these marvellous covers are a reminder that all these musicians were very good songwriters, and that, in 2006, a revival of them was in urgent demand.
