For a lot of listeners, Virginia rapper Nettspend would be easy to immediately dismiss after a song or two. His sound is a combination blown out trap beats somewhere between Whole Lotta Red-era Playboi Carti rage and Witch house, and vocals oversaturated with as much AutoTune as possible. Dropping in anywhere on his 15 song, 31 minute debut mixtape Bad Ass F*cking Kid will probably deliver the boom of a clipped, distorting 808, Nettspend rapping about girls, drugs, or his hectic nightlife in a slurry, computerized flow, and a melodic sample struggling to hold the beat together. Some of the songs are little more than that. "Perc Soda," "Leader," "Shut Up," and other tracks are fairly interchangeable examples of this style, and without listening closely, Bad Ass F*cking Kid comes off as this one-note presentation over and over and over. Every so often, however, Nettspend breaks into something wildly unexpected like the Jersey club-styled beat of "Beach Leak," or the rephrasing of a Grimes sample into an ethereal weirdness on "Skipping Class." There are glimpses of pop fun and lyrical sensitivity beneath the walls of blown out noise, but Nettspend makes the listener work for them. The nod to ambient techno buried in the beat of "Drop The Blunt" or the aching piano figure that starts of "A$AP" are both quickly absorbed by the overwhelming sounds Nettspend gravitates towards the most, but they still contribute to the strange, deceptively deep sound he spins throughout the project. Bad Ass F*cking Kid is a curious release. Even with the off-putting overproduction, the monotonous similarities between the tracks, and the non-personality Nettspend puts front and center in many of his lyrics, there's still something compelling, valuable, and even a little bit mystifying happening here.
