It’s difficult not to notice Tzimon Barto, who is more of an otherworldly musical anomaly that leaves no-one unmoved. Barto is a man of many talents… A poet, philosopher, body-builder and polyglot (he speaks seven languages!); he doesn’t do things by halves. However, his style of playing is often found to be quite polarising. It’s too soft for some and too aggressive for others, his rhythm is too rigid or too rubato, the recital too messy or too unpredictable. His free thinking approach can render his piano somewhat disconcerting. At first glance, these musical blasphemies might seem challenging, but this isn’t the case. Barto’s astonishingly innovative reading of the repertoire’s great works makes sure of it. The first measures of his interpretation of the Well-Tempered Clavier, which has long since crystallised in our collective memory, deliver a walloping punch, leaving a bruise that can only be healed by the rest of the record. Whilst entire generations of pianists and musicologists have struggled in vain to decide on the ideal interpretation of Bach’s keyboard works, Barto has created an infinitely personal furrow that nobody else would have thought to invent. Whereas they have warred over two key questions regarding rhythm (square vs rubato) and mode (legato vs detached), Barto refuses to engage in the battle.
