Beyond the obvious differences between mainstream and period readings of Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, BWV 1001-1006, there is the further consideration of an artist's personality becoming a more significant measure than the style per se. In his 2018 release on Channel Classics, Ning Feng presents these unaccompanied works on a 1721 Stradivari violin, the "MacMillan," though his use of a modern bow elicits the warm sounds associated with mid-20th century conventions rather than the characteristic sheen and edge of Baroque sonorities. The music is played in a straightforward manner, note for note, with little in the way of embellishment except where notated, so Feng has adopted an approach that is not too far from most modern interpretations. Once the matter of style has been put to the side, Feng's reflective attitude and expressive phrasing with rubato come to the fore, giving the whole album the feeling of a private reverie rather than a public statement. Feng's renditions feel subjective, and lean rather more toward a rapt performance by Yehudi Menuhin than, say, the clear-eyed, controlled interpretations of Rachel Podger. Feng's playing is attractive and his technique is polished, so these performances will please most listeners except those who favor only historically informed performances.
