This Brooklyn-by-way-of-Chicago trio practice an avant branching out of punk-cum-electro that they’ve described as “ghost punk.” And while FUTURE isn’t conventionally haunting, its unpredictable glitches and arhythmic tendencies, particularly when buoyed by Anna Barie’s dissonant yelps, have a way of staying in your subconscious. Like their peers in Mahjongg and Gang Gang Dance, Powers create atmosphere out of repetitive and often noisy ambience, relying on a sort of recklessly postmodern tribalism. And their tactics are particularly effective on droners like "Light After Sound,” which evokes a creepily lo-fi take on Massive Attack with all the lounge-y bombast stripped away.
