Alas means "wings" in Spanish, and avoiding the all-caps title here might have made the title meaning clearer to non-Hispanophone audiences. The album takes its title from the opening work by composer (and pianist) Gerardo Di Giusto, one of three works here that pay tribute to Alberto Ginastera, whose Variaciones concertantes conclude the program. This and other works by Ginastera are played often enough, but this concept by the Orchestre de Lutetia and conductor Alexis Cárdenas sheds light on his influence and even puts his music in a whole new light by teasing out the strands it contains. All three of the modern works are world premieres, and each one picks up on a specific aspect of Ginastera's music, all of them contained in the Variaciones concertantes. Di Giusto's work for violin, cello, and strings picks up on Ginastera's use of propulsive rhythms, while Gabriel Sivak's Descaminos for cello, strings, and percussion catches the tension in Ginastera's work between growing extensions of tonality and traditional material. That tension rises to a peak in Alejandro Iglesias Rossi's Llorando silencios: Six Quechua Songs, a solo cello work in a high modernist language that vividly retains its Amerind origins. Ginastera would have loved it, in fact, would have loved all these pieces in these beautiful performances, and the album is of great value to listeners beyond Argentina interested in contemporary trends there.
