Like many "great records" Ágætis Byrjun defies classification. It is rock? New age? Prog? Post rock? Mind-blowing music? Psychedelia on diazepam? A Martian space jam? This second album from Sigur Rós has still got all the oddness that we saw at the time of their first release in 1999. Like shoegaze, all the silky electro sounds layered on top of one another by the Icelandic collective have an original, hypnotic effect that wouldn't have disgraced Brian Eno... But underneath these mad-scientist tunes, Ágætis Byrjun brings together real songs and genuine harmonic constructions. The virginal falsetto of singer Jón Þór Birgisson on Svefn-g-englar and her overpowering chorus, the refined violins at the zenith of Staralfur or the pseudo-jazz with trip-hop contours on Hjarta› hamast: these and other marvels make this Sigur Rós record a real shock to the senses. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
