A fear of dying once inspired Charley Crockett to work fast—he's released ten albums since 2017. But with his congenital heart defect repaired, Crockett's productivity has now settled into a more comfortable pace of one album per year. Written and recorded with frequent collaborator Billy Horton, $10 Cowboy is a collection of originals that Crockett says were penned on the road, behind venues, in dark alleys or in his truck parked on the street in his current hometown of Austin, Texas. He has a retro honky tonk style that today's Nashville has sadly forsaken. More a talker than a singer, he's firmly attached, just like his country music heroes, to adding a touch with reverb, as in tunes like "Good at Losing," whose lyrics reach back into the archetypal themes of country music history: "They laughed at me in New York City/ Called me a fool in L.A./ I doubt that Nashville saw me coming/ Besides the bar folks working late." In "Hard Luck & Circumstance," another throwback to what many consider country music's best days, Crockett's voice echoes Lefty Frizzell as he revives the obligatory hapless loser lament, "You know it's hard luck/ And circumstances/ That brought me here/ And if they hang around much longer/ I might just disappear."
While a connection to authenticity drives the honesty in his music, Crockett is also aware of the need to stretch. He ventures into the country soul territory once so beautifully explored by Charlie Rich on "Getting Tired Again" and the album's consummate number, "America." With a chord progression remarkably similar to Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," Crockett's "Solitary Road" is a solid jump into familiar folk rock. In another historical allusion, $10 Cowboy was recorded live in Austin at famed Arlyn Studios with members of his road band—Kullen Fox (organ, trumpet, guitar), Nathan Fleming (pedal steel), and Mario Valdez (drums)— supplemented by 19 guest players. They rise to the occasion and stir the magic of spontaneity. © Robert Baird/Qobuz
