The Natural Lines
Based around the warm, melodic songwriting of leader Matt Pond, the Natural Lines are an indie rock band from Kingston, New York. Essentially a stylistic continuation of the introspective guitar pop of the singer's previous band, Matt Pond PA, the Natural Lines' eponymous debut album was released in 2023 by U.K. indie Bella Union.
At the tail-end of the 2010s, Pond decided to retire his long-tenured indie rock project, Matt Pond PA, which had been actively recording and touring since the late '90s. Chief among his many collaborators over the years was Chris Hansen, a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist who often served as Pond's musical foil. In 2022, the two friends revived their creative union under the Natural Lines banner, bringing in additional players like Hilary James (cello/vocals), Kyle Kelly-Yahner (drums), Sarah Hansen (horns), and Louie Lino (keyboards) as part of a rotating staff of collaborators. A deal was struck with Britain's Bella Union label, and the band issued their debut EP, The First Five, in October 2022. Featuring glowing harmonies and a yearning tone, the Natural Lines' self-titled full-length appeared in March 2023.
