Sandy Kelly

Although her career has included detours into folk, traditional Irish music, and contemporary pop, Sandy Kelly is best known as a singer of warm, lilting country music in the vein of her multi-occasion duet partner, Willie Nelson, and Patsy Cline, whom she portrayed on the West End. After stints in touring band the Fairways and family act the Duskeys, she went solo with 1985's Paradise Tonight, a major-label release featuring sleek pop production. However, beginning with the success of "Woodcarver," her 1989 duet with Johnny Cash, and her version of the Willie Nelson classic "Crazy" -- both from her 1989 LP I Need to Be in Love -- she devoted her talents to country music. Released in 1993, Kelly's Heroes was a star-studded affair that included duets with Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell, and many more, including George Hamilton IV, who partnered with her for 2001's We Will Meet Again. The compilation The Voice of Sandy Kelly: The Songs of Patsy Cline appeared in 2010, and she presented her first solo album in 30 years, the John Carter Cash-produced Leaving It All Behind, in 2023. Born Philomena Ellis in Ireland and raised primarily in Wales, Sandy Kelly came from a show business family and took part in her grandfather's troupe, Dusky Dan's Variety Roadshow. She later became a member of touring outfit The Fairways and was featured (as Sandy Duskey) on their hit single "Come Back Billy Joe" from 1976. She next formed the Duskeys, aka the Duskey Sisters, with her sister Barbara Ellis and cousin Nina Duskey. Their single "Don't Feel Like Dancing" saw release in 1980, and in 1981, they finished in third place in the Irish national finals of the Eurovision Song Contest with "Where Does That Love Come From." Nina's brother, Dan (aka Michael Palace), joined the Duskeys shortly after. As a quartet, they entered the Irish playoffs for the European Song Contest again a year later, and this time, they won with "Here Today Gone Tomorrow," which was reworked to become a Top 20 hit in Ireland. They went on to finish just outside the Top Ten in the international finals. The Duskeys continued releasing singles and touring for another two years, before Kelly made her way forward as a soloist with the CBS Records release 1985's Paradise Tonight, which featured modern pop production. A few years later, she had an enduring hit with "Woodcarver," a duet with Johnny Cash that appeared on her second album, 1989's I Need to Be in Love. Also featured on that album was a cover of Willie Nelson's "Crazy" that became one of the bestselling singles of 1989 in Ireland. She committed to country stylings thereafter, releasing the albums By Special Request and You Need a Friend in 1990 and 1991, respectively. Meanwhile, Kelly enjoyed a three-year run as host of her own weekly television show, Sandy, and she was then cast as the lead in the West End production of Patsy, a musical about country legend Patsy Cline. An invitation to join Johnny Cash in Nashville led to the opportunity to record and tour with a host of legendary country artists, among them Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Glen Campbell, Tammy Wynette, and Chet Atkins. Sandy's 1993 album, Kelly's Heroes, included appearances by many of these stars and more, including an archival appearance by the late Patsy Cline. George Hamilton IV was another duet partner on the album, and they teamed up for the 2001 release We Will Meet Again. Crashed Records issued the compilation The Best of Sandy Kelly in 2008, following it two years later with The Voice of Sandy Kelly: The Songs of Patsy Cline. Kelly turned up on the 2014 single "Welcome Home," a duet with John McNicholl, then returned to the studio -- specifically the late Johnny Cash's Cash Cabin in Nashville -- to record her first solo album since 1993. Produced by Grammy winner John Carter Cash (Johnny and June Carter Cash's son) and Willie Kelly (Kelly's son), Leaving It All Behind included "re-cut" acoustic versions of duets with Johnny Cash ("Woodcarver") and Willie Nelson ("Against the Wind") alongside all-new material.
