Samaria

Samaria is a contemporary R&B artist with an aptitude for narratives that captivate, whether she's portraying characters or navigating real life. The Bay Area native made her self-released commercial debut in 2015 with The Story of Right Now, an EP that preceded a short-term affiliation with major-label Republic. Independent over the course of the next several years, she gained ground with a couple additional EPs and a slew of singles before offering the highly expressive and poised Even Paradise Rains, issued in 2024 through RCA. Raised in both Oakland and nearby Berkeley, Samaria Boykin started playing keyboards and writing songs as a youngster, taking after her mother, a singer, and father, who was in a rap group. Songwriting became a form of therapy for Samaria in her early teens following the death of her supportive grandmother, and it was around this time that she made her first recordings. Years later, a remake of Drake's "Brand New," uploaded by Samaria to her SoundCloud page, led to connections with DTB and Mill, producers who assisted her with the making of her nine-track 2015 EP The Story of Now. A couple years later, Samaria relocated to Los Angeles with hopes of advancing her career, and she attracted a Republic Records deal with a set opening for KR. The ballads "Foolish" and "Shy Girl" arrived in 2018, and though both quickly reached seven-digit streaming figures, Samaria was soon independent again, returning in 2019 with the assured Adventures of a Lovergirl EP. During the next few years, Samaria issued numerous singles culminating with another EP, Didn't Start with You, featuring "Out the Way" and "Still Got 4ever," two songs exemplifying her ability to evoke late-'90s pop-R&B with a subtly expressive personal style all her own. A handful of subsequent tracks issued during the latter third of 2023 and early 2024 led to another concise project, Even Paradise Rains, Samaria's first RCA release. Three of the eight songs were collaborations with hitmaker Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, producer for the likes of Brandy, Destiny's Child, and Beyoncé.
