Richard O. Burdick

Richard Burdick is an American horn player and prolific composer of chamber music and concertos for horn and other instruments. Inspired by the I Ching, many of his compositions utilize a sophisticated 64-step microtonal system. He was born in El Cerrito, California in 1961 and began playing the horn in the mid-'70s at El Cerrito High School. Later, he attended California State University, East Bay Campus where he studied composition with Earl Saxton. After graduating, Burdick worked as a freelance horn player, concert producer, and composer. From 1984 to 2003, he managed the Trinity Chamber Concert series in Berkeley, and he was a frequent performer in its impressive production of over 400 concerts. He became the principal horn player with the Napa Symphony in 1988, and from 1990 to 1996 he performed with the Sacramento Symphony. After returning to the Napa Symphony in 1997 and appeared with the Fresno Philharmonic, the North State Symphony, the Sacramento Opera, and the Sacramento Philharmonic. He began releasing recordings of his compositions in 2001 with the albums Rebel with a Horn and I Ching Arpeggios, Op. 99. He also recorded the works of other composers, such as Louis-François Dauprat and Victor Herbert, and his arrangements of J. S. Bach’s cantatas and Easter Oratorio for horn were also popular. In 2003, Burdick moved with his family to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he became the principal horn player of the Regina Symphony Orchestra and Regina Symphony Chamber Players. He also taught horn at the University of Regina from 2004 to 2019, and he remains very active as a performer and composer. As of 2023, he has composed over 300 works, and his discography contains nearly 80 albums.
