Renésens
A fan of strong symbols, the Renésens group was formed in La Réunion in 1998 to mark the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. Originally made up of Dominique Aupiais and her three children Paolo, Morgan and Damien, accompanied by Jean-Jacques Pifarely, Jérôme M'Bajoumbé and Michel Tsofotandro, the group owes its name to a locality in Sainte-Suzanne, where the Aupiais family lives. Dominique, who was originally from Brittany but later moved to Reunion Island, wanted to combine his two cultures in music, and the group came up with a "Celtic maloya". The group's first CD, Nou Lé Pa Plus Nou Lé Pas Moins, was soon released, featuring four tracks that define the group's aesthetic vision. This association appealed to the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, which programmed Renésens in 1999, motivating the group to release their first album: Maloya Breizh. The latter gained in stature, buoyed by the title track "Moin Lé Pa Ek Sa", which received airplay on French radio stations. Claiming their "Creolo-Celtic" approach, which intrigues as much as it seduces listeners, the group continues to grow with a second album, Rézistans, in 2003. Renésens completes its palette, incorporating sounds from Latin and seafaring traditions that bring the group concerts, again at the Festival Interceltique in 2004, which records the show on disc. In 2005, the group was shaken by a tragic accident involving the Aupiais family, which resulted in Damien's death. Renésens reassembled and returned to the stage a few months later, opening for Denez Prigent. The release ofIntercultural (2008), the group's third album, asserts its musical identity and tells its story through the song "Oubli Pa Zot". After several invitations to the Festival Médiéval de Blanche Couronne from 2009 onwards, Renésens developed its approach to Celtic music and released a new album in 2012, Amazin Kelt.
