Polski Chór Kameralny
Based in Gdánsk, the Polski Chór Kameralny is one of Europe's top small choirs. The group has a large repertory but emphasizes virtuoso contemporary music and has premiered more than 500 new works.
The Polski Chór Kameralny (the name means "Polish Chamber Choir"), in full, the Polski Chór Kameralny Schola Cantorum Gedanensis, was founded in 1978 by Ireneusz Łukaszewski. He was succeeded in 1983 by his brother, Jan Łukaszewski, who remained its director as of the mid-2020s; his long tenure has been a factor contributing to the choir's distinctive sound. The choir, based in Gdánsk, includes 24 singers who are professionals. The fall of the Iron Curtain opened up many new performance opportunities for the choir, which has performed widely in both Poland and the West. Its orchestral collaborators have included the Sinfonia Varsovia in Warsaw, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and the Venice Baroque Orchestra. An early recording by the choir came in Germany on the Carus label, with 2006's Józef Swider: Te Deum. Three years later, the group moved to Poland's Dux label for the first-ever complete recording of Krzysztof Penderecki's choral music, and it made several more recordings of Polish choral music for that label.
The Polski Chór Kameralny performs music from the Renaissance to the present day. It is especially noted for its commitment to contemporary music, often of a virtuoso nature; the group has won plaudits for its performances of difficult music. The choir has given the world premieres of more than 500 works by such major composers as Henryk Górecki, Wojciech Kilar, and Penderecki. The Polski Chór Kameralny has been heard at festivals both inside and outside of Poland, including Warsaw Autumn, the Ruhr Festival in Germany, and the Rendez-vous musique nouvelle in France. In 2017, the group moved to the Warner Classics label for a recording of motets by Pawel Łukaszewski. The Polski Chór Kameralny returned in 2023 on Ondine with an album featuring Górecki's spare Church Songs, Op. 84.
