Peter Orth
At the age of six, Peter Orth was inspired to take up the piano after seeing Artur Rubinstein in recital. He began studying with Benjamin Whitten in Philadelphia, and later studied with Adele Marcus at the Juilliard School. Following graduation, he was invited by Rudolf Serkin to take part in the Marlboro Festival and to attend the Institute for Young Performing Musicians in Guilford, Vermont. He took first prize in 1979 at the Naumberg International Piano Competition, which led to his debut recital at Alice Tully Hall. He was coached for many years by Paul Doguereau in Boston. Among the orchestras Orth has performed with were the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Residentie Orkest den Haag, the Orchestre National de Lyon, and the Norddeutsche Philharmonie. Orth moved to Cologne in 1992, where he began his European career, giving recitals and performing at festivals. He serves as professor of piano and chamber music at the Hochschule for Music in Detmold, Germany, and he has recorded for CPO, Tacet, and Challenge Classics.
