Ocho

Founded in 1972 by vibraphonist, pianist, and bandleader Chico Mendoza (born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 20, 1939), Ocho are now acknowledged as one of Latin New York funk’s pioneering bands. Mixing Latin music, funk, and jazz, Ocho’s line-up also featured Andy McCloud (bass), Charlie Marshall (tenor saxophone, flute), Herbie Morgan (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute), Xavier Lynch (baritone saxophone, flute), Billy Phipps (baritone saxophone, flute), Charlie Jones (bongos, percussion), Donald Howard (congas), Butch Johnson (timbales), Manny Román (vocals), Jimmy Sabater (vocals), and Willie Torres (vocals). The ensemble’s self-titled debut album was released in 1972, followed by Ocho II (1973), Numero Tres (1974), and Tornado (1976).
