Michael Gibbs

Fluent in piano and trombone by the time he reached 18, In 1959, Mike Gibbs left Zimbabwe to study at the Berklee College Of Music and Boston Conservatory. Gibbs further relocated to England in 1965, playing trombone for Graham Collier and John Dankworth, and subsequently recording a series of highly acclaimed albums featuring many of the most prominent British-based jazz-rock players, including Kenny Wheeler, Alan Skidmore, Chris Spedding, and Frank Ricotti. He returned to Berklee as a tutor and composer-in-residence in 1974, but left in 1983 to work as an arranger and producer for Joni Mitchell, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Whitney Houston, and Peter Gabriel, among many others. Gibbs returned to recording, appearing on John Scofield’s Grace Under Pressure in 1992, before releasing his own BIG MUSIC in 1998.
