Man East  

East Man is a grime project helmed by Londoner Anthoney Hart. Referring to his style as "Hi Tek," Hart's full-lengths such as 2018's Red, White & Zero are grime at its rawest and most direct, with angular, futuristic beats, hard-hitting rhymes from several guest MCs, and a complete absence of pop hooks. The music pays tribute to the sounds of U.K. pirate radio, and the lyrics are informed by London's racial- and class-related divisions, street violence, and the struggle for survival. Born in Hastings in 1979, Hart has a background in rave-era pirate radio. Since the late 2000s, he has been releasing noise, drone, industrial, and experimental techno as Imaginary Forces, and he initiated the Basic Rhythm moniker for his stripped-down club-friendly material in 2016. East Man's debut album, Red, White & Zero, was released by Planet Mu in 2018, and included verses by Killa P, Darkos Strife, Kwam, and other MCs. An EP titled Stop Flapping Your Gums, Vol. 1 inaugurated the Hi Tek Sounds imprint. This was followed in 2019 by the "Horse Mouth" 12" (with Walton) and the Eastern Code EP, issued by Padre Himalaya. Stop Flapping Your Gums, Vol. 2 appeared in early 2020, and second full-length Prole Art Threat arrived in July, including lyricists such as Ny Ny, Streema, and Mic Ty. The instrumental full-length Hi Tek Music appeared in 2022.
