Leah Turner
After taking a credible stab at mainstream country-pop in the early 2010s, singer Leah Turner reoriented her sound in the early 2020s, blending Mexican music with traditional country and pop. Turner unveiled this transition on her 2021 EP Lost in Translation, then continued down that path with "South of the Border," a 2023 single recorded with fellow genre-bender Jerrod Niemann.
The daughter of champion rodeo star Don Tuner and jewelry designer Susana Galvan, Leah Turner was raised on a ranch in Morongo Valley, California. Gravitating to music at an early age, she started writing original songs at the age of six. While attending college at the University of California, Santa Barbara, she happened to sing in front of Kenny Loggins, who encouraged her to head to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music.
Turner managed to connect with producers Humberto Gatica and David Foster but she was unsatisfied with the initial recordings, so she relocated to Nashville, Tennessee to position herself as a country singer. Signing with Columbia Nashville, she released an eponymous EP in 2014, earning some airplay with the singles "Take the Keys" and "Pull Me Back." Her alliance with that label proved to be short-lived. Within a few years, she was working as a songwriter -- she had credits on Cody Purvis' "Drinking Terms" and Kristy Lamb's "Bad Habit" -- and refashioning herself as an indie artist; she released a second eponymous EP on California Country Music in 2017.
By the early 2020s, Turner threaded in Latin influences -- primarily Mexican -- into her bright country-pop, showcasing this transition on the 2020 single "Once Upon a Time in Mexico." That song, along with the subsequent singles "Wax on the Table" and "Vaquera and the Cowboy," were on the 2021 EP Lost in Translation. Turner continued to move in this Mexican-inflected direction with "South of the Border," a 2023 single featuring Jerrod Niemann.
