King Isis

Fusing the sounds of genres including alt-rock, blues, jazz, and indie pop, singer/songwriter King Isis makes music that combines vulnerably and virtuosity. The California native made their label debut with the EP scales in 2023. Born and raised in Oakland, Isis Brown learned to play the piano on an instrument passed down from their great-great-grandmother, Omega King, one of the first Black opera singers in Chicago and an inspiration for their stage name, King Isis. Years of formal music training and private schooling coincided with their coming into their own queer identity and feeling like an outsider, ultimately leading them to pursue alternative music realms as well as improvisation and experimentation. Their debut recording, "Strange Luvv," appeared online on Valentine's Day of 2020, with the alternative R&B-leaning three-song EP #1 following in mid-2021. The latter was co-produced by Jaden Wiggins (Otis Kane). In the meantime, they landed slots at Bandcamp Oakland's debut showcase and Noise Pop Festival. King Isis shifted their complex sound from R&B toward indie rock on the follow-up, resulting in a record deal. The scales EP arrived on Dirty Hit in partnership with No Matter in March of 2023.
