Kalush Orchestra

The tight vocal rhythms, efficient grooves, and occasional sung passages of Ukrainian hip-hop group KALUSH speak to the serious side of everyday life. After releasing their first album, HOTIN, in early 2021, they won the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with "Stefania" by KALUSH Orchestra, an expanded version of the group that incorporates elements of folk and traditional Ukrainian music. Named after the hometown of the group's founder, rapper Oleg Psiuk, KALUSH joins Psiuk with multi-instrumentalist Ihor Didenchuk (Go_A) and MC Kilimmen. In October 2019, they released a music video for their first single, "Ne Marynui," that was shot in Kalush. A second single and video, "Ty Honysh," followed a month later, leading to a record deal with Def Jam Recordings. The group made their full-length and Def Jam debut with HOTIN in February 2021. It wasn't long before the follow-up, ЙО-ЙО (aka YO-YO), a collaboration with rapper Skofka, appeared in July. In the meantime, they created an offshoot of the group, KALUSH Orchestra, with an aim to incorporate folk stylings and traditional Ukrainian music into their contemporary hip-hop sound. Additional members included multi-instrumentalists Tymofii Muzychuk and Vitalii Duzhyk and backing vocalist Johnny Dyvnyi. In February 2022, KALUSH Orchestra finished as runners-up to Alina Pash in the competition to represent Ukraine in that year's Eurovision Song Contest. That same month, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine. When Pash later withdrew from the competition, KALUSH Orchestra stepped in with "Stefania," an infectious, uptempo tribute to Psiuk's mother. In May 2022, the group won the Eurovision Song Contest while receiving the highest percentage of points from televoting in the history of the contest to that point (93.8 percent).
