Julie Cooper
Julie Cooper is among Britain's leading composers of film and television soundtracks. She has also written music for theatrical productions and for the concert platform.
Cooper was born in the U.K. in 1964. She studied composition at Cardiff University in Wales, and it was in Wales that she earned her first commission for a BBC Wales television score. Early in her career, Cooper focused on scores for regional theatrical productions around Britain, including those for Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood at the Theatre Royal in Plymouth, Shakespeare's Macbeth at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London, and a U.K.-wide tour of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. She wrote soundtracks for dramas on the BBC 3 and BBC 4 radio networks, including Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler and Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. Cooper also composed music for Imagination Group advertisements during the first part of her career.
Cooper has gone on to compose soundtracks for productions in many visual media, including films, wildlife documentaries, and various kinds of television dramas. Her work has been heard on many BBC television and radio channels as well as on the independent ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 networks. In addition to bespoke soundscapes linked to visual media, Cooper has written concert music for ensembles ranging from percussion quartet to choir and orchestra, as well as music for keyboard. Since 2014, she has been composer-in-residence and orchestrator for the Crazy Composers educational project in partnership with The English Concert Baroque orchestra. Her works have been heard at such major venues as the Royal Albert Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as at several festivals.
Cooper has written music for such soloists as percussionist Evelyn Glennie and soprano Grace Davidson, as well as the contemporary urban dance company Union Dance. Cooper has released several albums on the Universal conglomerate's Chappell and Chappell Noir labels; Haunted by the Secret earned two nominations at the Production Music Awards. She has written music for video games, and in 2019, she released the album Cinematic Gamescapes. The album Symphonic Skies featured Davidson and offered music for panoramic aerial cinematography in film, television, and advertising. Cooper's 2020 album Seasons featured the BBC Concert Orchestra and was commissioned by the BBC for use in documentaries in the Natural History and Human Stories series. The 2022 Signum Classics release Julie Cooper: Continuum featured original compositions by Cooper for orchestra or keyboard, and it included guest appearances from Davidson and violinist Elena Urioste and spoken words from actress Adjoa Andoh (Bridgerton).
