Jean Thorel
Conductor Jean Thorel travels widely as a conductor of many genres of music, including ballet. He is a strong advocate for contemporary music, having led the world premieres of some 700 works.
Thorel was born in 1958. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris, studying orchestral conducting with Jean-Jacques Werner and Léon Barzin and ballet conducting with Antal Dorati and André Girard. He also won prizes in counterpoint and harmony at the Conservatoire. Supported by conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus, Thorel won the Vocation Foundation Prize in 1989. By that time, he had already been permanent conductor of the Stringendo Orchestral Ensemble for four years, and his reputation began to spread beyond France. In the mid-1990s, he frequently appeared as a guest conductor in the Scandinavian countries and Poland, conducting both orchestral concerts and ballet productions. In 2002, he conducted the Russian National Orchestra and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble on recordings, becoming the first French conductor to do so in both cases. Thorel has also appeared as a guest with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, among other groups, as well as various French ensembles. He has performed widely with contemporary music groups, including So Percussion, the Percurama Percussion Ensemble, and Musiques Nouvelles. Thorel was chief conductor of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2016, and since 2011, he has been the principal guest conductor of Ireland's EQ Ensemble, a contemporary music group, and he is consistently seen as a guest at major contemporary music festivals.
Thorel has appeared on more than ten recordings in a variety of genres. His 2000 recording of works by Louis Saguer with the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble won the Disque Lyrique Orphée d'Or prize in 2002. Thorel has collaborated on several releases with recorder player Michala Petri. In 2013, he recorded an album of mallet concertos with percussionist Evelyn Glennie and the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong; the album appeared on the Naxos label in 2021.
