Ian Buckle

Versatile British pianist Ian Buckle is known on recordings as an accompanist but also has a varied career as a soloist and chamber musician. A performer with a strong commitment to contemporary music, he is a co-founder of the Pixels Ensemble. Buckle attended the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. In 1996, he made his London debut with a recital at Wigmore Hall. Buckle is a familiar figure on British orchestral programs, with ongoing relationships as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the John Wilson Orchestra, and has also appeared in concertos with the Royal Philharmonic, Sinfonia Viva, and the Manchester Concert Orchestra. With the John Wilson Orchestra, he recorded Gershwin's Second Rhapsody (also known as the New York Rhapsody) live at London's Wigmore Hall in a performance also broadcast on the BBC Radio 3 network; that recording is available on streaming media. In 2011, he made his formal recording debut on the NMC label, backing clarinetist Mark Simpson on the duo recital Prism. In 2016, Buckle co-founded the Pixels Ensemble and remained its artistic director as of the mid-2020s. That group plays music of various periods but is oriented toward contemporary music, which has become an important focus of Buckle's career; he has had works written for him by Benjamin Hackbarth, Timothy Jackson, Michael Spencer, and other composers. He has also performed with other chamber groups, including the Zephyr piano-and-wind ensemble and the Elysnan Horn Trio; the latter group was formed when the members were students at the Royal Northern College of Music. He has also accompanied various other instrumentalists (and sometimes vocalists) in performance and on recordings; in 2015, on the Naxos label, he backed violinist Andrew Long on the album Edward German: Souvenir. He has often worked with pianist Richard Casey, performing contemporary duo works, and with violinist Sophie Rosa; he accompanied her on several albums on the Rubicon label, including Closing Statements (2023), featuring works by Schumann, Schoenberg, and Silvestrov. In recital, Buckle has often participated in programs that join music and poetry. Buckle teaches at Leeds University and Liverpool University, and he is active as an examiner with ABRSM, the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music.
