Gunilla Sussmann

Norway's Gunilla Süssmann is a leader among the new generation of classical pianists in her country, and her reputation has begun to broaden beyond Scandinavia. She was born June 22, 1977, in Bergen, and started playing the piano at age six. Süssmann graduated in 2000 from the Norwegian State Academy of Music, where her teacher was Einar Steein-Nökleberg. She continued studies with him but also enrolled in master classese in Munich and Darmstadt, Germany. Those classes, plus a series of prizes (Youth Piano Championships in 1987 and 1995, the Grieg Competition's Special Prize in 2000, and the Robert Levin Festspill Prize in 2002), propelled her toward formal studies abroad, and she received a diplomat from the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, Germany in 2003. Her international career was launched two years later with a solo recital at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Süssmann has offered solo recitals and concerto appearance around Norway, Germany, and Sweden, as well as in Krakow, Poland and Belgrade, Serbia. Even prior to finishing her degree in Hannover, Süssmann had made her recording debut with an album of music by Norwegian composer Geirr Tveitt on the Naxos label in 2002; the album won a prize nomination at the Cannes Classical Awards in France. She has also recorded for NMA, AVI, Simax, CAvi-Music, Berlin Classics (a cycle of the Johannes Brahms: Violin Concertos Vol. 1-3 with Catherine Manoukian), and, in 2018, Ondine, on an album of Rautavaara works with cellist Tanja Tetzlaff, with whom she had previously recorded the Brahms: Cello Sonatas. Süssmann has also served as a vocal accompanist, backing soprano Solveig Kringlebotn on the 2008 album Romanser. Süssmann's other collaborators have included Martin Fröst, Lars Anders Tomter, and the Vertavo String Quartet. Her 2018 concert schedule included an appearance in Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54, with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner.
