Genus Ordinis Dei

Genus Ordinis Dei is an Italian symphonic death metal group combining technical prowess and epic storytelling. Established in 2011 by a circle of professional music instructors, the band inked a worldwide deal with Eclipse ahead of the release of their acclaimed sophomore LP, 2017's Great Olden Dynasty, which, like its 2013 predecessor, is part of a narrative trilogy. 2019's Glare of Deliverance and its 2023 prequel, The Beginning, continued in that vein while mixing the group's ambitious narratives with high-concept videos. Based out of Crema, Italy, Genus Ordinis Dei was founded in 2011 by music instructors Nick K (vox & guitars), Tommy Monticelli (guitars & orchestra), and Nico Pedrali (drums). The group independently released their self-produced and narrative-driven (it was to be the second act in a planned trilogy) debut, The Middle, in 2013. The following year saw the band enlist production help from friend and frequent tour mate Marco Coti Zelati (Lacuna Coil), releasing an eponymous EP in 2016 via Danish label Mighty Music, which also reissued The Middle. In 2017, the group signed with U.S. label Eclipse Records and unveiled their sophomore effort, Great Olden Dynasty. A critical and commercial success, the LP featured a guest vocal from Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia on the track "Salem" and production by Simone Mularoni (Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, DGM). Looking to include a visual component to their high-concept tales of love, betrayal, religious persecution, and the origins of humankind, the band produced a series of striking videos to accompany the songs on their third long-player. Released in 2020, Glare of Deliverance followed the story of a woman named Eleanor's capture and interrogation by the Inquisition. Genus Ordinis Dei elaborated on the tale in 2023 with a prequel, aptly named The Beginning, which once again utilized strong visual elements to enhance the band's sharply drawn narrative.
