Geneva Jacuzzi

Los Angeles-based Geneva Jacuzzi produces surrealist lo-fi art that spans recordings, music videos, installations, and unique, character-driven performances. Active since the early 2000s, her brand of tripped-out synth pop helped establish the aesthetic that was eventually termed hypnagogic pop by the end of the decade, yet her work was always more theatrical than her peers, taking influence from sci-fi, pantomime, and the performance art-driven side of new wave. Her first official album, 2010's Lamaze, contained highlights drawn from several self-issued CD-R releases, and 2016's Technophelia, a mixture of studio and home recordings, was more polished but no less strange and original. Geneva Garvin played in several bands during the 2000s, including Obelisk and Vibe Central, but Bubonic Plague gained the biggest following. Songs from the group's self-issued CD-Rs additionally appeared on her solo releases as Geneva Jacuzzi, and some of her work appeared on Human Ear Music, a Los Angeles-based label that also released early recordings by Julia Holter and Nite Jewel. Jacuzzi contributed covers to Manimal Vinyl-issued tributes to the Cure and Madonna, and her first vinyl release, the Group Dynamic EP, was issued by Big Love Records in 2009. Lamaze, a selection of tracks recorded to cassette between 2004 and 2009, was released by Vinyl International in 2010. Her track "The Sleep Room" was included on the Stones Throw-issued Minimal Wave Tapes Volume Two in 2012. Jacuzzi toured with artists such as John Maus and sometime collaborator Ariel Pink, and presented installations, videos, and art performances at galleries, venues, and festivals on several continents. Her second album, Technophelia, was co-produced by Chris Coady and released by Medical Records in 2016. She issued two volumes of Secret Demos as tour-only CD-Rs, and guested on releases by Spookey Ruben, Jorge Elbrecht, and Raw Thrills. In 2020, Mexican Summer released Jacuzzi's 2010-recorded "Dark Streets" as part of their Looking Glass singles series, and the label reissued Lamaze in 2021.
