Dazy

A powerful mélange of great melodies, pop-friendly hooks, and fuzzed-out guitar crunch, Dazy is the brainchild of musician and publicist James Goodson. Dazy started out as a bedroom recording project, and the music uses homebrewed recording technology and lo-fi production techniques to his advantage, while the walls of guitar and layers of self-executed harmonies keep his work from sounding sloppy or unfocused. Goodson's early material is collected on the 2021 anthology MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD: The First 24 Songs, while he turned from singles and EPs to a cohesive full-length album on 2022's Outofbody. Based in Richmond, Virginia, where he's been living since he was 18, Goodson's adventures in music go back to the 2010s, when he was a member of the Richmond punk band Teen Death, who issued an EP, Crawling, in 2014. He later played bass and sang in the band Bashful, who put out the album Driving in 2020, but during this period he was making his living as a publicist, spreading the word about other bands through his company Let's Go Publicity. He also hosted a podcast, The Best Good Band Podcast, where he discussed bands and albums he loved and what made them memorable. Throughout it all, Goodson had been writing songs, many of which didn't suit his bands of the moment, and when the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 gave him some unexpected free time, he began working some of them up with his home recording rig. Believing there was little philosophical difference between a demo and a final recording and appreciating the brevity and efficiency of the two-song single format, Goodson created the alter ego Dazy to release "Bright Lights" b/w "Accelerate" in August 2020. A second digital single, "It's Coming Around" b/w "Wind Me Up," appeared a month later, and two more singles would appear before the end of the year. Becoming a bit more ambitious, Dazy brought out a three-song EP, Revolving Door, in January 2021, and an eight-song project, The Crowded Mind, arrived in April 2021. Like the previous releases, Goodson recorded the songs at home, handling all vocals and instruments himself, while Justin Pizzoferrato mixed and mastered the tracks. The first six Dazy releases were compiled onto a cassette release with five bonus tracks and titled MAXIMUMBLASTSUPERLOUD: The First 24 Songs, which was released in August 2021. The collection earned enthusiastic reviews in the indie music press, and Goodson was soon getting as much attention as some of his clients. Dazy collaborated with the buzzy L.A. punk band Militarie Gun for their next project, a track called "Pressure Cooker," which was released in March 2022. Goodson put together a live version of Dazy to tour in support of his many releases, sharing stages with Militarie Gun, Mo Troper, and Star Dust. After releasing a wealth of singles and EPs, Goodson decided it was time to try something more ambitious and cohesive, and he began work on Dazy's first proper album. Once again working with Pizzoferrato, Outofbody was typically straightforward, squeezing 12 songs into 25 minutes while making room for more refined pop sounds along with his usual overdriven guitars and snappy drum machines. It was released by the Philadelphia-based indie Lame-O Records in October 2022.
