CASisDEAD
CASISDEAD is the oft-masked alter ego of a British rapper who is stern and unflappable whether he's rhyming over boom-bap, synthwave, drum'n'bass, or vintage slow jams. Representing Tottenham, he first appeared in the mid-2000s as Castro Saint -- alternately Castro and Cas -- and after a few years of activity left music for half a decade, only to reappear in 2012 as CASISDEAD. Prolific over the next couple years, he issued a flurry of singles, the grim "All Hallows'" among it, that was compiled on the 2013 mixtape The Number 23. A collaboration with Giggs on the 2016 single "501 (Hollow & Heston)" put him in the U.K. Top 40 for the first time. After a steady flow of singles over the next several years, CASISDEAD delivered his unrelenting Top Ten debut album, Famous Last Words, in 2023.
A native of London, England's Tottenham district, CASISDEAD was active under his original alias from 2005 through 2007. He returned, newly named, after a five year absence, supported by a multimedia crew called the Dead Team. Nightmarish CASISDEAD narratives issued during 2012 and 2013 were anthologized during the latter year with The Number 23, a mixtape with a diverse set of productions highlighted by "All Hallows'" and the steely "Leon Best." A cassette-only EP entitled Commercial 2, released in 2015, featured retro-futuristic synthesizer-driven material sourced from the likes of Chromatics and Glass Candy. A crop of singles and collaborative crossover one-offs followed thereafter, including "501 (Hollow & Heston" (a number 38 U.K. pop hit led by Giggs), "Does It" (Tricky), and "Won't Admit It's Love" (Toddla T). Headlining singles "The Grid" and "Pat Earrings" continued CASISDEAD's supply of dramatic, if considerably less grim, material. A few additional singles over the next few years were followed by Famous Last Words, CASISDEAD's first proper album. A cohesive mix of new and previously released material with guests ranging from Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant to singer/songwriter Connie Constance, Famous Last Words entered the U.K. chart at number seven.
