Especialista em arquivos de todos os gêneros, Neil Young tirou desta vez de seu chapéu um álbum de estúdio inédito gravado em 2001 no Toast Studios em São Francisco com sua banda Crazy Horse. Seus fãs já tinham ouvido o Loner ocasionalmente mencionar a existência desta sessão, que ele descreveu da seguinte forma: "A música do Toast é sobre um relacionamento. Há um momento em muitos relacionamentos que dão errado, um momento bem antes da separação, quando uma pessoa, talvez as duas, percebe que acabou. Foi naquela época". Foi essa tristeza profunda que levou o canadense a enterrar as gravações, que ressurgem aqui. Duas décadas depois, é muito bom poder saborear o conteúdo, já que alguns temas - como a música de abertura Quit - são super cativantes. Toast também é mais uma prova do poder do Crazy Horse (Frank "Poncho" Sampedro na guitarra, Ralph Molina na bateria e Billy Talbot no baixo) que fez mil faíscas de guitarra em Standing in the Light of Love e soube administrar maratonas elétricas - durante os treze minutos de Boom Boom Boom Boom - como nenhuma outra formação do Loner! Note que se faixas como Standing in the Light of Love, Timberline (uma história de um lenhador desempregado lutando com sua fé) ou Gateway of Love nunca tinham sido lançadas, algumas delas, como Goin' Home, apareceram em versões diferentes em seu álbum de 2002, o Are You Passionate?
