Peter Gabriel tem trabalhado em i/o — abreviação de input/output (entrada/saída) — há 20 anos, retrabalhando, regravando e ensaiando músicas na estrada. O resultado final é uma viagem expansiva: dois álbuns com as mesmas músicas mixadas de maneiras diferentes por, como disse Gabriel, "dois dos melhores engenheiros de mixagem do mundo". Spike Stent (Ed Sheeran, Björk, Madonna) cuida do chamado "Bright Side" e Tchad Blake (Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, the Black Keys) do "Dark Side". Comparar os dois pode ser como uma caça aos ovos de Páscoa; escolher um favorito geral é difícil e a melhor aposta aqui pode ser criar uma playlist pessoal combinada.
Em lugar nenhum as diferenças são mais claras, e interessantes, do que em "Road to Joy", um tesouro de orquestra movimentado cheio de ruídos peculiares com um coro jubilante. A versão bright é uma canção pop, à la saída de Gabriel nos anos 80: a guitarra funk de David Rhodes está em destaque e os metais são marcantes. A versão dark de Blake é uma criatura mais estranha, colocando os metais em um papel mais estridente e enfatizando o baixo. A faixa-título emocional também lembra os dias de glória pop do cantor, enquanto ele atinge as notas de falsete freneticamente e o Soweto Gospel Choir acrescenta um toque exuberante. O "Dark Side" de Blake destaca o ritmo envolvente enquanto Stent ajusta as cordas para soar como um resplendor solar. Às vezes, a diferença é simples: "Olive Tree" do bright é mais cheia e completamente arredondada; já no dark, ela tem mais espaço e tudo parece mais baixo na mixagem. Para "The Court", a versão de Stent adiciona percussão extra no refrão, dando-lhe um toque mais agitado, e a de Blake tem mais solenidade. Ambas dependem de um arranjo orquestral sombriamente melancólico para sublinhar a mensagem da música sobre a, como Gabriel descreveu, "luta entre a ordem e o caos" no sistema judiciário.
Há um tema recorrente de conexão em i/o, não apenas um anseio por isso no mundo, mas uma verdadeira crença em seus poderes de cura e possibilidade. Gabriel faz um argumento pelo bem de que o celular de todos seja uma testemunha em "Panopticom", que apresenta um baixo musculoso de Tony Levin e encontra os teclados espaciais de Brian Eno aliviados pela guitarra acústica calorosa de Katie May, especialmente na versão bright. Peter Gabriel tem trabalhado em i/o — abreviação de input/output (entrada/saída) — há 20 anos, retrabalhando, regravando e ensaiando músicas na estrada. O resultado final é uma viagem expansiva: dois álbuns com as mesmas músicas mixadas de maneiras diferentes por, como disse Gabriel, "dois dos melhores engenheiros de mixagem do mundo". Spike Stent (Ed Sheeran, Björk, Madonna) cuida do chamado "Bright Side" e Tchad Blake (Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, the Black Keys) do "Dark Side". Comparar os dois pode ser como uma caça aos ovos de Páscoa; escolher um favorito geral é difícil e a melhor aposta aqui pode ser criar uma playlist pessoal combinada.
Em lugar nenhum as diferenças são mais claras, e interessantes, do que em "Road to Joy", um tesouro de orquestra movimentado cheio de ruídos peculiares com um coro jubilante. A versão bright é uma canção pop, à la saída de Gabriel nos anos 80: a guitarra funk de David Rhodes está em destaque e os metais são marcantes. A versão dark de Blake é uma criatura mais estranha, colocando os metais em um papel mais estridente e enfatizando o baixo. A faixa-título emocional também lembra os dias de glória pop do cantor, enquanto ele atinge as notas de falsete freneticamente e o Soweto Gospel Choir acrescenta um toque exuberante. O "Dark Side" de Blake destaca o ritmo envolvente enquanto Stent ajusta as cordas para soar como um resplendor solar. Às vezes, a diferença é simples: "Olive Tree" do bright é mais cheia e completamente arredondada; já no dark, ela tem mais espaço e tudo parece mais baixo na mixagem. Para "The Court", a versão de Stent adiciona percussão extra no refrão, dando-lhe um toque mais agitado, e a de Blake tem mais solenidade. Ambas dependem de um arranjo orquestral sombriamente melancólico para sublinhar a mensagem da música sobre a, como Gabriel descreveu, "luta entre a ordem e o caos" no sistema judiciário.
Há um tema recorrente de conexão em i/o, não apenas um anseio por isso no mundo, mas uma verdadeira crença em seus poderes de cura e possibilidade. Gabriel faz um argumento pelo bem de que o celular de todos seja uma testemunha em "Panopticom", que apresenta um baixo musculoso de Tony Levin e encontra os teclados espaciais de Brian Eno aliviados pela guitarra acústica calorosa de Katie May, especialmente na versão bright. "No ar, a nuvem de fumaça toma forma / Todos os telefones tiram fotos enquanto está quente / Panopticom, vamos descobrir o que está acontecendo", canta Gabriel sobre o que ele descreveu como um apelo para a "criação de um globo de dados acessível infinitamente expansível". Há momentos mais íntimos também, como "Playing for Time", uma faixa à la Randy Newman explorando a bênção e a maldição da memória, e a rica balada de piano "So Much".
