Sometimes you have to destroy something in order to rebuild it better. At the risk of confusing their most fiercely devoted fans, Deafheaven decided to cut some of the most savage ingredients that helped forge their identity to focus more on dreamy pop sounds. Airy guitars and synth layers take precedence over the saturated sounds which, although they remain present, often punctuate a gradual rise in tension towards the end of the track in the manner of post-rock bands. A finely crafted work that allows the Californian combo to take a deep breath while offering an image that hasn't changed that radically. After all, didn't musicians already draw on these ethereal sounds to create their famous blackgaze of the past?

Even if the instruments remain identifiable, it is the vocal work that definitively marks the break with their previous albums. A clear voice has taken over from the screams worthy of the greatest black metal bands, which have finished by fading away except for two or three intense moments when they erupt. This brings back this visceral side to Deafheaven's music, as at the end of Great Mass of Color, of Villain and of the fabulous Mombasa of which the finale, we would say, revives the drums and guitars worthy of their 2013 SunbatherInfinite Granite may disturb some purists, but it remains a magnificent journey to the frontiers of shoegaze and dream pop taken by a band in full possession of its abilities, and which takes responsibility for its choices to deliver an album full of nuances. A success. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
