On this thrilling, amped-up outing, six-string wizard Marc Ribot plays the compositions of John Zorn with beautiful intensity. Flanked by bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer G. Calvin Weston (who has played with Ornette Coleman), Ribot turns in a stunning set that draws on hard rock, free jazz, fusion, and funk. The ghosts of Jimi Hendrix and Sonny Sharrock hover in Ribot's playing here: this is ensemble avant-rock made for and by the courageous. Zorn's compositions are from his Masada series, and lend themselves perfectly to gutsy, forward-thinking interpretation.
