Since the late 70s, the Munich-based label has been a haven for the British saxophonist, who navigates chamber jazz, avant-garde free jazz and dreamy folk with a unique lightness. His music is all mountains, oceans, lakes, plains and valleys, with little regard for fashion. Whether by himself or alongside some of the greats (Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Barre Phillips, Terje Rypdal, Paul Bley, Gary Peacock, Tony Oxley...), he creates timeless enchantments to be played on repeat. DE: John Surman ist nicht nur eine wichtige Figur im europäischen Jazz und bei ECM — er spielt auch wie kein anderer! So sehr, dass man die Musik, die aus seiner Sopran-, Bariton- oder Bassklarinette kommt, sofort wiedererkennt! Seit den späten 70er Jahren ist das Münchner Label eine Anlaufstelle für den britischen Saxophonisten, der mit einzigartiger Leichtigkeit zwischen Kammerjazz, avantgardistischem Free Jazz und verträumtem Folk navigiert. Seine Musik handelt von Bergen, Ozeanen, Seen, Ebenen und Tälern, abseits von der Mode. Ob allein oder an der Seite von Größen wie Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Barre Phillips, Terje Rypdal, Paul Bley, Gary Peacock, Tony Oxley... er erschafft mit seiner Musik zeitlose magische Klänger, die man immer wieder hören kann.
