Twenty-five years ago, on August 17, 1995, Blur and Oasis were battling it out for the number one single in the British charts. And while Damon Albarn's band won the battle with "Country House" by a wide margin, the Gallagher brothers would soon make up for it with the album (What's The Story)" Morning Glory?, which would leave little competition. But they are far from being the only bands declared "best enemies" by the music press, a trend that dates back to the 1960s, when the media pitted the Beatles against the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys to find out who the greatest pop stars were.
Often solely created to stimulate sales, some of these rivalries were nevertheless very real, namely between Guns N' Roses and Nirvana. Kurt Cobain hated being compared to Axl Rose, whose lyrics he considered misogynistic. The Smiths and The Cure also had their fair share of rivalry, so much so that Morrissey declared The Cure’s music as giving "a new dimension to the word 'shit'". Turbulent relationships also erupted between Pavement and The Smashing Pumpkins—the former openly criticizing the latter in their song "Range Life": "Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins/ Nature kids, but they don't have no function/ I don't understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck". The rivalry between the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre was even made into a film, 2004's Dig!.
Leaders of major bands have also sometimes succumbed to their pugilistic sides, including the Beatles, who tore themselves apart after their split, leaving fans to choose between the pop genius of Paul McCartney and the committed avant-gardism of John Lennon. The same could be said of Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Roger Waters.
