Fiona Brice
British composer and violinist Fiona Brice started her career at the end of the 1990s when she graduated from the Royal Academy of Music. Best known at the time for her work with Placebo -- particularly on their 2006 release Meds -- she made her solo debut in 2016 with the quasi-instrumental album Postcards From, a collection of spare, cinematic snapshots, each inspired by a different city. Her second solo album, 2022's And You Know I Care, was a more lushly arranged production that incorporated vocals.
A native of Northampton, England, Brice's earliest collaborations as a King's College London and Royal Academy of Music graduate included performing with Dream City Film Club and contributing to their 1999 release In the Cold Light of the Morning. She also spent time with other London-based bands, including Tram and Jack. Alongside work as a session violinist -- she appeared on U.K. TV with the likes of Gorillaz, Sophie-Ellis Bextor, and Sugababes -- Brice also started arranging for other artists. Her first such work appeared on the debut solo album from Dream City Film Club's Michael J. Sheehy, Sweet Blue Gene, in 2000. Around the same time, she made appearances on records by the likes of Vashti Bunyan, Tindersticks, and Ed Harcourt.
In 2005, Brice started working with Placebo on their fifth studio album, 2006's Meds, for which she did string arrangements. Continuing to work with the group on the follow-up, 2009's Battle for the Sun, she also joined them as violinist on their associated world tour, including a semi-acoustic performance at Cambodia's Angkor Wat. She provided string arrangements and backing vocals for the band's 2013 album Loud Like Love before officially parting ways with Placebo in 2017.
In the meantime, Brice continued to arrange and orchestrate for others, and by 2015 she had worked with a wide variety of artists, among them Kanye West, Anna Calvi, John Grant, and Kate Nash. Although these types of collaborations had dominated her career, it wouldn't be long before Brice set about recording an album of her own. Released by Bella Union in June 2016, her mostly instrumental debut LP, Postcards From, was inspired by her travels around the world, with each track bearing the name of a city or town she'd visited. It spawned a remix EP, Postcards Reframed. She contributed to albums by BNQT, Lost Horizons, Mark Ronson, and Elbow, and composed music for the TV documentary series Our Dementia Choir (2019) and short film White Light (2020). In 2022, Brice returned with another solo album for Bella Union, And You Know I Care.
