Diamante Electrico
Diamante Eléctrico is a Latin Grammy-winning Colombian rock band whose sound continually vacillates between blues-rock, pop punk, indie rock, and R&B. Their overdriven sound has been recognized internationally by the rock press, as well as artists ranging from the Foo Fighters to the Rolling Stones thanks to their intense performance style and their media-savvy videos. Their songs are mostly brief, ranging from three to four minutes, wrapped in hooks, fuzzed-out production, tight vocal harmonies, and a paced but furious energy, as evidenced on 2014's B, which won that year's Latin Grammy for Best Rock album and was selected by Colombia's Rolling Stone as the most important rock album of the year. By contrast, 2018's Buitres, released after years of road and studio work, was celebrated with chart success and Latin Grammy nominations.
Diamante Eléctrico was formed in Bogota in 2013 by Juan Galeano (vocals, bass), Daniel Álvarez (guitar), and Andee Zeta (drums), the group immediately made waves on the Colombian independent scene and was able to release its eponymous debut that same year; it reached number one on the local charts with the single "Nos Rompemos Igual." 2014's B fared even better, earning the band a Best Rock Album of the Year Latin Grammy. Diamante Eléctrico returned in 2016 with La Gran Oscilación. Recorded in analog with assistance from Third Man Records mixing engineer Joshua Smith (Jack White, Raconteurs); its more experimental and conceptual framework delivered the band's most ambitious work to date. Both the album and the single, "Déjala Rodar," came up winners at the 2017 Latin Grammy award ceremony for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song respectively.
After a world tour that found them conquering stages across Latin America, Europe, and the U.S., the trio set out to expand their musical horizons yet again. Galeano and his bandmates had been listening to soul and R&B records ranging from classic Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye to modern hip-hop from Childish Gambino and wanted to make a record that departed from their live-in-studio method of working. As producer, Galeano convinced his partners to experiment and not just work in a single studio. Over eight months, Diamante Eléctrico worked in Nebula studios in Bogotá and Electric Lady Studios in New York with mixing engineer Brandon Borst and mastering engineer Gavin Lurseen. The end result was Buitres, an album that took groove as its central tenet. To that end they sampled classic soul records from the '60s and '70s and sprinkled them throughout the album alongside vintage-sounding beats and percussion. In addition, tracks such as "Oro" and "Nefertiti" wove a hybrid between pop and funk. They enlisted Anna Bulbrook from the Airborne Toxic Event to add her violin to the song "Casino," and the female mariachi band Flor de Toloache to perform with the band on album-closer "No Me Lo Pidas," a charting single. Upon release in September of 2018, Buitres landed inside the Top Ten on the digital charts of five Latin American countries and netted a pair of Latin Grammy nominations. The following year, Diamante Electrico issued Buitres & Co. on which they revisited the entire album with guest collaborators on each song save for "No Me Lo Pidas" with Flor de Toloache, which was reprised from the 2018 release. Other collaborators included Bunbury ("Hacia la Noche"), the Dead Weather's Alison Mosshart ("El Naufragio"), and Vicente Garcia ("Solo Tú, Dueles").
