Amy Shark
Singer and songwriter Amy Shark has made multiple trips to the top of the album chart in her native Australia with her merger of angsty indie pop/rock and anthemic pop. With a boost from the shimmering multi-platinum "crush song" "Adore," her 2017 EP, Night Thinker, went to number two Down Under and won her ARIAs for Breakthrough Artist and Best Pop Release. She went all the way to the top of the album chart a year later with the platinum-selling Love Monster, which won, among other awards, Album of the Year at the ARIAs. Not done yet, Shark returned to number one in 2021 with the follow-up, Album of the Year nominee Cry Forever, which featured "Love Songs Ain't for Us," a Top 30 duet with Keith Urban. She charted again with the R3hab collaboration "Sway My Way" in 2022, following it with singles including a rare acoustic-minded outing, 2023's "High on You" with Sam Fischer. That year, Shark made her debut as a judge on a reboot of TV's Australian Idol.
Born Amy Billings in Gold Coast, Amy Shark is actually her second stage name. After quietly making music for several years as Amy Cushway, she entered a song in the Queensland Music Awards and ended up winning the pop category. She then began touring nationally and received an arts grant that allowed her to work with producer M-Phazes on her song "Adore." The single was well-received on radio upon release in 2016 and became a smash hit in Australia by early 2017, reaching number three on the singles chart and going platinum five times over by the end of the decade.
Shark signed with Sony Australia's Wonderlick label, and her official debut EP, Night Thinker, entered the country's albums chart at number two a few months later. The EP garnered six ARIA nominations and took home two, including Best Pop Release and Breakthrough Artist. Released in July 2018, Shark's first full-length effort, Love Monster, was an even bigger success, topping the album chart and going platinum. It also won her three more ARIAs: Album of the Year, Best Female Artist, and Best Pop Release. She toured throughout much of the following year and appeared on the Chainsmokers' 2019 single "The Reaper" before heading back into the studio to record her follow-up.
Throughout 2020 and into the next year, she issued charting singles like "Everybody Rise," "C'Mon" (featuring Travis Barker), and "Love Songs Ain't for Us" (featuring Keith Urban) in advance of her sophomore album, Cry Forever. Maintaining her previous combination of gritty and sleek textures, it topped Australia's album chart upon its release in April of 2021. While it didn't take home any ARIAs, it was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Release, and Shark garnered a nomination for the re-branded Best Artist award.
In June 2022, Shark and R3hab released a cover of "Sway," which had been a Top Ten hit for New Zealand's Bic Runga in 1997. The remake landed in the Top 30 in both Australia and New Zealand. In early 2023, Seven Network relaunched Australian Idol after its 14-year absence, and Shark appeared alongside Harry Connick, Jr., Meghan Trainor, and others as a judge. Meanwhile, she continued to release music, including the Sam Fischer quasi-acoustic collaboration "High on You" and that June's more emphatic "Can I Show at Yours?"
