In spring 2016, when Declan McKenna brought out his EP Stains at just 16 years old, it was hard not to speak about the fresh young genius of pop... It was at the age of 16 that this young Brit won the Emerging Talent Competition at Glastonbury Festival the previous year. He had such a mastery of composition, singing and guitar that the listener's breath was taken away. And to make this discovery even more incredible, McKenna didn't limit himself to a single style, but was recording rock, blues, folk and pop. Better yet, he made waves with his lyrics, like those on Brazil, in which he denounces the corruption at the heart of FIFA. On Brazil, but also on Paracetamol (both tracks from this EP) appear on What Do You Think About the Car?, his first studio album - an impeccable piece of contemporary pop. This is the pop of a young man who knows his classics (he probably sleeps with the Beatles catalogue under his pillow), but has also grown up with all manner of music. A polychromatic palette of sounds blaze into every corner of this album, where the revitalising energy of the compositions is easily the equal of the politically engaged writing, especially on Brazil, but also on Make Me Your Queen, which tackles questions of gender identity. With viscerally catchy melodies and powerful words that are never naive, Declan McKenna appears like a potential spokesman for his generation Z, which is becoming more politically engaged than ever before. On the strength of repeated listening to this Qobuzissime album, it is hardly surprising Nina Simone counts this young, politically committed and indomitable singer as one of her idols. © CM/Qobuz
