Since gaining recognition for the soundtrack to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant in 2015, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto have not stopped opening the doors of perception. With Two, the German-Japanese duo continue their series of extrasensory experiences which began with the album Vrioon in 2002, followed by four other long formats, an EP and a soundtrack. This album captures their 2018 performance at the Sydney Opera House, the final stop in a series of prestigious live performances that took them to the Funkhaus in Berlin, the Greek Theatre in Barcelona (closing the Sónar festival), the Barbican Centre in London and Hammer Hall in Melbourne.
On that night in Sydney, Noto and Sakamoto seem to have been carried away by the gentle trance that their collaboration inevitably provokes. Their modus operandi? The German musician instils electronic sounds (vibrating crystals, electrocardiograms, heartbeats) while the Japanese musician drifts away on the piano, sketching out soaring motifs. He sometimes adds a little more weight (Berlin) though always plays with finesse and never too forcefully, floating like a mist over water. And since it is difficult to describe their music in any way other than through sensations, it’s best that you just close your eyes and listen. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
