Ascension is the keyword for Australian, now Londoner, Teneil Throssel's highly anticipated debut album. From the opening track "Channels" there is already a feeling of transcendence above the sweaty dance floors that HAAi usually reigns queen over. Like stumbling through an unfamiliar rave, we are presented next with "Pigeon Barron" which is as if you are listening to a dance party through a wall, with its slightly muffled textures and unpredictable breaks. Throssel's rich and organic approach to her production mixes euphoric ambience with mercurial techno beats creating a tracklist that sweeps you away.
Unlike many techno albums, Baby We're Ascending is much more than just an hour of hard hitting beats you can flail your limbs to. Championing a heavily male-dominated field, HAAi brings a more sensual and 'communal' approach to her work. Using UK trans activist Kai-Isaiah Jamal’s spoken-word poetry cuts through the capricious "Human Sound", Alexis Taylor's voice from Hot Chip on "Biggest Mood Ever" and Jon Hopkins input on "Baby We're Ascending", the collaborative tracks here recreate the sense of inclusivity that techno raves allow space for.
On the rest of the album, it is the solo tracks that give us those punchy moments every electro fan looks for, with highlights on the dark "Louder Always Better", "AM", "FM" and "Purple Jelly Disc." Beyond that of the underground venues that HAAi is known for, this debut comes as a refreshing surprise, showing Throssel's true versatility not only as a DJ, but also as a budding producer. A truly current and almost tangible album, surely fans will be flocking to the dancefloors to hear more. © Jessica Porter-Langson / Qobuz
