Turbo
Canadian singer/songwriter Turbo has brought together his love of hip-hop and country into a perfect mix of trap-based, rock-infused country with the release of his 2021 album Cocaine & Fireworks.
Born and raised in Calgary, Nicholas LaMonaca (aka Turbo) grew up on a diet of country music, with his father, Al LaMonaca, playing guitar and banjo in numerous Calgary bluegrass bands. Turbo also found himself drawn to hip-hop and hard dance music, eventually being inspired by Avicii's "Le7els" to start producing his own music. After graduating high school, he set about creating hip-hop, initially with the idea of getting guest rappers to supply vocals, but instead started to lay down his own. Tapping back into his country roots, he began to meld the two genres, keeping the trap-based beats and layering them with guitar and a mix of rapping and singing. In 2019, he self-released his debut album, Sixth Gear, with the track "Light Speed" catching the ear of labels 10K and Homemade Projects. Inking a deal with the pair, he issued his first release for them, "Heart Stop," in 2020. A slew of tracks followed, and in mid-2021 he delivered his sophomore album, Cocaine & Fireworks.
