Molly
An ambient post-rock duo from the Austrian Alps, MOLLY released a series of glacially toned EPs that eventually netted them a deal with U.K. shoegaze specialists Sonic Cathedral, which released the band's debut album, All That Ever Could Have Been, in 2019. Bandleader Lars Andersson adopted a "more is more" credo for the follow-up, 2023's Picturesque, which was largely based on a Romantic-era Novalis fable.
Formed in the alpine town of Innsbruck in 2014 by singer/guitarist Lars Andersson and multi-instrumentalist Phillip Dornauer, MOLLY worked up a spacious blend of dream pop, shoegaze, and post-rock, earning a fervent fan base with a pair of 2016 EPs, Sun Sun Sun and As Years Go By. Their 2017 EP, Glimpse, further solidified their reputation for icy textures and cinematic arrangements. After signing with Sonic Cathedral, MOLLY made their full-length debut in June 2019 with All That Ever Could Have Been.
With an eye toward romanticism, the project's next album took influence from fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm, E.T.A. Hoffmann, and others, but focused on the quest of titular character in Heinrich von Ofterdingen by German writer and philosopher Novalis. Conceived and recorded mostly by Andersson (who also mixed and mastered the album), with Dornauer playing drums, the lavish Picturesque arrived on Sonic Cathedral in January 2023.
